Rainwater Harvesting for the Garden * Hands On!

You will leave having calculated your needs, with a waste water valve, and be set up for a system to water your yard or garden with fresh rainwater!

..
This hands-on workshop will provide an overview of rainwater harvesting and its uses, introducing concepts and techniques for harvesting rain passively in your yard and garden.

* You will leave with some of the actual materials * as well as the knowledge needed to build your own rain barrel watering system, generously underwritten by the Engineers for International Sustainability (EIS) club at Clarkson University!

It will cover the design and installation of rainwater harvesting systems and will involve participants in building their own first-flush valve to take home (up to a $100 value, included free in workshop cost.)

The EIS at Clarkson University will also underwrite at least $50 in material costs to the first ten people to purchase the rest of the materials needed to build your own system at home - based on what you learn and the calculations that we will help you make to determine your watering needs.

Wednesday, May 2
5:30 to 7:30 pm
Potsdam, NY
Please RSVP for the location and full details (see 'To Register' below.)

NOTE:  Information on the number of subsidized spots forthcoming, first come first-served.
Sign up quickly if you'd like to take advantage of this opportunity! Beyond those initial slots, there are only 5 "unsubsidized" slots open, which will largely be taken by an extra family member joining in the fun (only one valve and $50 subsidy per household.) See TO REGISTER below.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE
**  There will be a brief explanation of rainwater harvesting and it's advantages and uses, with a demonstration.
**  We will calculate how much area, volume, and efficiency in order to evaluate the tank size you will need. We'll do a site analysis of the location for your use.
**  We will then each build and glue an innovative first-flush valve that each participant will take home with them at no additional cost.
**  We'll then move on to actually build a working model on a shed roof so you have that experience to take home with you as well.
**  This workshop also includes the opportunity to receive underwriting of a minimum of $50 in material costs for the first ten participants who purchase the equipment needed for their home systems!  With thanks to the Engineers for International Sustainability club at Clarkson University.

What you need to bring with you to take advantage of this great opportunity:
- area of roof that will collect rainwater (square footage, specifying the length of gutter you would use in the dimensions)
- size of garden/area to be watered (approximate square footage)
- slope of garden/area to be watered (instructions provided here.)

PRESENTERS & UNDERWRITERS
Members of of Engineers for International Sustainability (EIS) at Clarkson University, a club focused on promoting sustainability on both the global and local scale. The EIS is concerned with the technical aspects of design projects as well as accompanying social responsibilities. Currently, they are working on improving a water system for a community in Uganda, and are excited to use their technical skills in real-life situations, helping North Country gardeners!

DONATION
  • Due to generous underwriting by the EIS, this workshop is being offered at a cost of $20 per person.
  • Please note that the value of this unique learning experience is actually $35 or more - but $15 of that is being underwritten! This workshop fee covers overhead expenses to benefit Local Living Venture non-profit workshop creation.
  • Scholarships: We would prefer that financial means not be an impediment to learning, and upon learning that this is an event that (due to the already generous underwriting) we did not plan to offer scholarships, a generous citizen has volunteered to donate up to three entry fees - call 315-261-1926 ASAP to be included!
  • Every participant will leave with a waste water overflow valve we'll build together for use in your system (up to a $100 value.)
  • The first ten participants to purchase the materials to build their home system will be subsidized further, with a minimum $60 reimbursement of receipts sent to the LLV.
  • Donations can be made by cash or check to "Local Living Venture" and will be collected on site during registration.
  • Please note that our generous Presenters are volunteers donating their time to support the Local Living Venture, and this is a major means of support for our community organization.
