10 - 3 pm

near Canton / Russell, NY
Advance Registration ends June 3, 2016 - placement cannot be guaranteed after this date.  However, a "wait list" will be started on a first-come, first-served basis.

Theory, including display and demo's of several variations of rocket stoves.
Tour of working larger models including a brief visit to a woodstove retrofit with water heater feature.

We will then build a downdraft/downfeed style summer kitchen stove unit (for use under shelter outdoors):

  • Assemble all components including (locally made) prefabricated metal core, chimney pipe and cooktop
  • Test fire the assembled unit

Lunch break and more conversation (bring a bag lunch please.) Enjoy a dessert that will be provided after lunch, baked atop a similar unit already in operation (pictured here.)

  • Mixing cob (with some theory and a lot of practice)
  • Applying inner and outer layers of cob mix
  • Test fire the completed unit

Concluding with an optional tour and discussion of other units in neighborhood including a J-tube Rocket Mass Heater (RMH) built with Erica and Ernie in 2012 and/or a more intensive look at the Stanley woodstove rockety retrofit with water heater that will have been seen briefly earlier.

This photo is the locally prefabricated core we will be working with to build this portable unit.  The unit was welded to our specifications from scrap materials at Sheehans Welding in Potsdam, NY for a cost of less than $150.  Scrappy welders can DIY it, use our specs to have a welder local to you do it, or order the same from Sheehan's.

Eddie Goldstein is our volunteer Presenter and self-identified fire geek.  He has been tinkering with dozens of versions of rocket stoves, from camp-style stoves to retrofitting his Stanley wood cookstove and many variations in between, for over a decade.  He says:
"For 30 years I have been heating and cooking at home exclusively with wood fuel, and an unexpected introduction to rocket stove technology 10 years ago revolutionized my relationship with fire.
Now I have 5 functioning rocket (or rocket-like) stoves that, in different ways, are a part of my daily life. Each was built (or modified) with “scrap” material and cob, with a particular function applied to the individual designs. They represent hundreds of hours of experimentation, with dozens of prototypes that now exist only as part of my learning curve!
The work of the Aprovecho Institute provided the foundation for this ongoing exploration.
Of course, fire itself has been my most valuable teacher. I look forward to sharing what I have learned with you…"
