Build an Ultra Light Canoe!

Join us for this hands-on boat build!
Summer will be here before we know it, and the Local Living Venture has teamed up with local canoe builder Will Sommerfield to learn hands-on the art and skill of building an ultra-light canoe for those warm days out on the water we all are waiting for!
The ultra-light canoe shown in the photos are a Platt Montfort design based on J. Henry Rushton's ultralight wood canoes, circa 1900, updated with an ultra light fabic shell. It is one of many built by Will Sommerfield and students to benefit local non-profit organizations and to share these skills with you!
This same model will be built during a Local Living Venture (LLV) workshop on consecutive weekends in May as part of a series of rural skills building workshops coordinated by the LLV. The boat will be raffled off, with workshop attendees receiving free tickets as part of the workshop.
The boat the group will build together will weigh in at only 12 to 14 pounds, with a capacity of 190 pounds carrying weight. Amazing, right!?!

DATES - all day (roughly 9-5) :
Saturday, May 13
Sunday, May 14
Saturday, May 20
Sunday, May 21
only 2 spots left! (limit 6)
It is okay to drop in and out of the sessions as much as you need to, though it is to your benefit to be there for as much of it as possible of course!
One or two people are also welcome to assist Will in the set up of the strongback and forms during the week prior (next week!) in order to have that full experience - this prep work would be included as a feature of the "co-op build" we plan for a later date as well, since we'd each need one.  Please indicate if you're interested in this bonus experience in your Registration reply.
Workshop attendees will leave with the skills needed to build these canoes, based on J. Henry Rushton's ultralight wood canoes, circa 1900.  One 1"x6'x12' board makes most of the boat. They are covered in a translucent heat-shrink aircraft fabric.

Students as young as 12 years old have helped build these vessels as part of local projects with the Nature Center at Robert Moses State Park, the Kiwanis, and the Adirondack Visitors Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths College.

The project takes 40 hours to build, and costs about $350.00 when buying materials retail. Only simple hand tools are required once the board is sawed into the needed dimensions.  All the building materials are non-toxic, including the adhesive which is used in making food grade wooden bowls.  Just one 1"x6'x12' board makes most of the boat!  They are covered in a translucent heat-shrink aircraft fabric.

Instructor Bill Sommerfield has been teaching since 1970, and has built many of these ultra-light, attractive canoes over the years. He has generously offered to donate his time to teach others, and to give the resulting ultra-light canoe to the Local Living Venture as a fundraising gift, to support our workshop creation efforts.

Registration is necessary as there is a limit on attendance for this hands-on workshop. Registered attendees will receive full details, including location and directions, by email.

For this unique learning experience, a $75 donation per person is requested for material costs, to cover overhead expenses and to benefit Local Living Venture non-profit workshop creation.  Take advantage of this opportunity now, as only 6 slots are available, and you will not find another workshop like this for under $750 outside of our area!

Donations can be made by cash or check to "Local Living Venture" and mailed to:
